Update on "White Christmas 2011"...

The latest run of the GFS computer model's snow cover forecast valid 6am CST on Christmas morning is shown below:

The depth may be underestimated across portions of western Kansas where there is still quite a bit of snow on the ground, but at least you can get the general idea as to who is likely to have some snow on the ground on Christmas Day.

Note the recent additions over western and northwest Texas, including a patch of accumulated (albeit light) snow to the immediate West of Ft. Worth.

It looks increasingly likely that light snow and/or flurries will also fall even further South in Texas, including parts of the Hill Country to the West of Austin and San Antonio on Christmas Eve.  Accumulation does not appear likely, however it will certainly give a nice, Christmas feel to the air for sure!  I'm keeping an eye on this disturbance and will make a more detailed post later today...

Sunday Update on White Christmas Potential...

The above image shows the latest GFS computer model forecast of snow depth valid at 6am CST on Christmas Day. As you can see, the model continues to predict that snow will remain on the ground across portions of the central Plains as a result of the major storm that will impact the region tomorrow and Tuesday.

There may also be some opportunities for other areas, including additional portions of the Appalachians, and even the southern or central Plains to receive measurable snow on or right around Christmas - in association with a couple more disturbances that are forecast to move across those areas this coming (Christmas) weekend.  Those possibilities are not currently reflected by the model on the above image.

Stay tuned for a more detailed update on this tomorrow...

Update on White Christmas Potential...

Please see my earlier post regarding the upcoming big storm for early next week, including the potential for heavy snow across portions of the central Plains.

As far as the big day itself is concerned, the latest run of the GFS computer forecast model suggests that snow will be on the ground in the following areas on Christmas Day.  The image is valid 6am CST on 12/25/11 (scale in inches on the right):

As you can see, the model suggests that measurable snow will remain on the ground through Christmas (from the early week storm) across Kansas, the Oklahoma panhandle, part of the Texas panhandle, and extreme northeast New Mexico.

There may also be more snow on the ground than is currently indicated across portions of the central and northern Appalachians, depending on how the storm tracks through midweek.

Stay tuned for updates!
