Please see my earlier post regarding the upcoming big storm for early next week, including the potential for heavy snow across portions of the central Plains.
As far as the big day itself is concerned, the latest run of the GFS computer forecast model suggests that snow will be on the ground in the following areas on Christmas Day. The image is valid 6am CST on 12/25/11 (scale in inches on the right):

As you can see, the model suggests that measurable snow will remain on the ground through Christmas (from the early week storm) across Kansas, the Oklahoma panhandle, part of the Texas panhandle, and extreme northeast New Mexico.
There may also be more snow on the ground than is currently indicated across portions of the central and northern Appalachians, depending on how the storm tracks through midweek.
Stay tuned for updates!
