The bad news is in the headline.... but the good news is that Ma-on has weakened considerably since this time yesterday. Maximum sustained winds are currently estimated at 85 mph, with gusts to 105 mph. Ma-on is moving Northward at 13 mph, and a turn toward the North/Northeast is expected later tonight.
Heavy rains and gusty winds are already impacting Japan, and based on the system's current track, the stronger winds near the center of Ma-on will begin to impact the region later tonight and into Tuesday.
Based on the above forecast track, it appears that the Kochi and Tokushima Prefectures will take the hardest hit early on, with sustained winds of 75-95 mph and gusts up to 115 mph possible, along with very heavy rain and high incoming wave action.
The system is forecast to maintain its current intensity before turning East and heading back out to sea after it passes through the Wakayama and Nara Prefectures on Wednesday.
