Earthquake Rattles St. Louis Area Early This A.M.

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake rattled portions of St. Louis and adjacent areas of Missouri & Illinois early this morning.  The quake took place just after 3 a.m. CDT and was centered 11 miles Southeast of Miramiguoa Park, MO (to the Southwest of St. Louis).

Residents report their homes shaking for 5 to 10 seconds in most areas.  No significant damage has been reported.

This area lies just Northwest of the New Madrid Fault Line, which has been relatively inactive in recent months.  Way back in the late 1800's, several strong earthquakes occurred along the New Madrid Fault, with magnitudes as high as 8.0 on the richter scale.
