Today in Severe Weather History for August 26

On this date in 1976, a tornado touched down near Kiana, Alaska in the Hockley Hills (about 30 miles North of the Arctic Circle!)

The funnel cloud in the image above was also observed in Alaska, but in 2005 on the Kenai Peninsula.

Tornadoes (reported ones, anyway) are indeed rare in Alaska.  During the period 1950-2004, only 2 tornadoes were observed in the state.  There were 31 tornadoes reported in Hawaii during the same period of time.
